Vineyards


The 60-hectare vineyard of Château Batailley is planted predominantly with Cabernet Sauvignon (70%), complemented by Merlot (25%), Cabernet Franc (3%), and Petit Verdot (2%). The vines, averaging 40 years of age, thrive in gravelly soils with clay and sandstone subsoils, providing excellent drainage and promoting deep root systems. This unique terroir, combined with the vineyard's elevation of up to 27 metres, contributes to the wine's structure and complexity.


Winemaking


The 2006 vintage was vinified in temperature-controlled stainless steel vats, allowing for precise fermentation. Malolactic fermentation took place in vats, followed by ageing in French oak barrels for 16 to 18 months, with approximately 55% being new oak. This careful ageing process imparts subtle oak nuances while preserving the wine’s fruit purity and elegance.


Appearance


The wine displays a deep ruby colour with garnet reflections, indicative of its maturity and depth.


Nose


The bouquet reveals aromas of cassis and ripe blackcurrants, intertwined with notes of cedar, cigar box, pencil shavings, and a hint of dried herbs, showcasing its classic Pauillac character.


Palate


Medium-bodied and finely balanced, the palate offers flavours of cassis, blackberries, and plums, complemented by nuances of cedar, liquorice, and a touch of earthy minerality. The tannins are smooth and well-integrated, leading to a long, harmonious finish.


Food pairing


Château Batailley 2006 pairs beautifully with roasted lamb, beef wellington, or game dishes such as venison. It also complements aged cheeses and mushroom-based dishes, making it a versatile choice for a range of savoury meals.


Background story


Château Batailley is one of the oldest estates in Bordeaux, with a history dating back to the 15th century. Its name, "Batailley," derives from a battle ("bataille") that took place on the property during the Hundred Years' War. In 1942, the estate was divided into two properties: Château Batailley and Château Haut-Batailley. Today, Château Batailley is managed by the Castéja family, who also oversee several other prestigious Bordeaux estates.

Machine wash separately in cold water on a gentle cycle. Tumble dry separately on low heat. Add QE Home Wool Dryer Balls to reduce wrinkles and increases drying efficiency. Touch up with a low heat iron as needed. Do not bleach or dry clean.
