Vineyards

Maté’s Vineyard, named after Maté Brajkovich, is the most iconic site within the Kumeu River estate. Located on clay-rich soils with excellent drainage, this north-facing vineyard produces some of New Zealand’s most acclaimed Chardonnays. The 2021 vintage benefited from a long, even ripening period, enhancing the wine’s depth and concentration.

Winemaking

The grapes were meticulously hand-picked and whole-bunch pressed to preserve their delicate aromatics. Fermentation occurred in French oak barrels, followed by 11 months of lees ageing with bâtonnage, adding texture and complexity.

Appearance

Golden straw with green hues.

Nose

Intense and complex, with aromas of ripe peach, citrus zest, and honeysuckle, layered with notes of flint, hazelnut, and a hint of vanilla.

Palate

Full-bodied and opulent, the palate showcases flavours of stone fruit, lemon curd, and toasted almond. The wine’s vibrant acidity and mineral backbone provide balance, leading to a long, harmonious finish.

Food pairing

An excellent match for lobster, roast pork, or rich vegetarian dishes such as wild mushroom risotto.

Background story

Maté’s Vineyard represents the pinnacle of Kumeu River’s winemaking, consistently producing wines of international acclaim. The 2021 vintage continues this legacy, reflecting the Brajkovich family’s dedication to crafting world-class Chardonnay.
